The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 13 percent increase in jobs for computer scientists through 2026.
It’s estimated that by the year 2020, more than 20 billion connected devices will be in use worldwide by a population of less than 8 billion humans.
Computer scientists design algorithms and use programming and state-of-the-art concepts in computer and information systems. With your Computer Science degree from HCU, you’ll join professionals who:

In your first two years in HCU’s Computer Science degree program, you will:
- Learn fundamental knowledge and skills in mathematics (e.g., calculus, linear algebra), science and computer programming
- Implement and demonstrate these skills in a sequence of projects
- Study additional concepts in programming, data structures and computer operating for more advanced subjects and projects in the upper levels
- Engage with HCU’s industry partners, including members of HCU’s Science and Engineering Advisory Board

HCU students in the bachelor’s degree in computer science program design and build real control systems and real computer programs.
In your junior and senior years in HCU’s Computer Science Program, you will:
- Learn important concepts in computer architecture, computer networks and security, advanced data structures and programming languages, and software design
- Choose from advanced elective courses in digital forensics and cyber crime, wireless and mobile security, reverse engineering, cryptography, distributed and cloud computing, data analytics, and blockchain
Computer science internships. Every student will complete at least one computer science internship before graduation, and every student in the College of Science and Engineering will complete a major industry-driven project during the senior year. HCU staff assists students in finding computer science internship opportunities from among many corporate partners.
Houston Christian University offers the only engineering education programs, including the study of computer science, in a major metropolitan area outside the northwestern US. The mission of HCU is to provide a learning experience that instills in students a passion for academic, spiritual and professional excellence as a result of our central confession, “Jesus Christ is Lord.”
In HCU’s College of Science and Engineering, at the start of freshman year, computer science students begin learning to address cyber-related issues (e.g., security, Internet of Things, embedded systems, software protection, network defense, programming, mobility, etc.). First-year computer science projects use a versatile hardware platform (mobile electronics kit, computing kit) to provide students with hands-on projects while learning the intricacies of engineering and computing. In this immersive learning environment, as computer science students deal with actual problems that require physical and practical solutions, they develop problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and other transferable skills.
Curricular threads in computer science are broad themes or topics that are, to some degree, in all HCU College of Engineering programs. Curricular threads include Cloud Computing (storage, access, security), Cybersecurity, Data Analytics and AI (Big Data, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence), Mobility and Wireless Security (mobile devices, Internet of Things) and Project Management.
The Securing America’s Future through Engineering (SAFE) Lab courses provide the foundation for students in all degree programs in the HCU College of Engineering. The SAFE Lab courses are taught in specially designed classrooms with tables seating four students with ready-to-use fabrication equipment, including soldering irons and other tools. For computer science students, these real-world applications build confidence, promote retention of knowledge and provide a much-needed, hands-on context for students living in our digital age.
For students pursuing computer science degrees or studying in any of our academic programs, HCU provides a wide variety of outstanding student services, including success coaches, tutors, study rooms and career counseling. Most of these activities are coordinated through the Academic Success Center, which aims to provide resources to facilitate the academic side of student success. Tutoring is HCU’s largest service, providing support for more than 90 courses.
Career Paths for Computer Scientists
HCU graduates of the BS in Computer Science degree program are well-prepared for high-demand jobs in energy, healthcare, marine transportation and other industries. Any company or agency involved in critical infrastructure needs computer scientists or information scientists to manage the information technology relevant to that organization.
Computer science graduates will work in security operations, information management, storage and security of information and other cybersecurity-related positions. Some computer science graduates will work in settings to design the next generation of software, so that better security measures can be built into the technology before operation and maintenance begins. The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) is the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society, and provides resources that advance computing as a science and a profession. The College of Engineering will soon form a student chapter of ACM to facilitate professional interactions for its students.
ACM provides the computing field’s premier digital library and serves its members and the computing profession with leading-edge publications, conferences and career resources. HCU encourages its Computer Science faculty and students to become members in ACM and other professional organizations.
