Nursing Scholarships

The Linda R. Dunham School of Nursing Scholarship Committee invites you to apply for awards at Houston Christian University. Scholarships will be awarded based on funder criteria, academic merit, financial need, and evidence of service. All applications are to be completed in full electronically and submitted to: dsonscholarships@hc.edu.  Please be advised that outside scholarship opportunities are also available. Information on potential awards outside of the School of Nursing committee can be obtained below or in the Nursing office. HCU School of Nursing Scholarship Application

Incoming BSN Cohort scholarship applications are due June 1.

*If you plan to take NURS 4415 in the summer prior to your 4th semester, please submit your application ASAP.

Scholarships will be awarded to outstanding sophomores, juniors, and seniors at HCU enrolled in Ministry, Nursing, or Education. These scholarships will be awarded, based on need and merit, to a maximum of three students.  Students must also be from a small town (less than 25,000 population) in the southwestern United States and active Evangelical Christians. All recipients will be named Linda Dunham Scholars.

Scholarships will be awarded based on need only. Recipients must be students from small towns in the southwestern United States (less than 25,000 population) and must be active evangelical Christians. Preference will be given to widows, widowers, single mothers or single fathers, or women or men returning to the workplace to pursue a degree as nurses, physician assistants, or nurse practitioners.

Provides $1,000 to $2,000 per year for undergraduate nursing students who are Latin American females with preference given to those from Honduras, Guatemala, or Costa Rica. *Please note that this is a departmental scholarship.

Criteria include:

• In good standing in the nursing program
• Evidence of financial need
• Have successfully completed NURS 3233 & 3408

This scholarship honors Halisia Frazier Cannon, the donor’s granddaughter, and a BSN graduate from HCU.

The alumni of the Lilly Jolly School of Nursing established a scholarship program for students enrolled in the BSN program at HCU. The scholarship provides an award to a student each year. The student must be enrolled in the clinical courses and show strong promise of success in the program.

Sigma Theta Tau is an honor society for professional nurses. Th Eta Phi Chapter is the local organization for Houston Christian University. The Eta Phi Chapter awards $500 annually to a graduate student for advanced studies in nursing. Applications for the scholarship may be obtained from the Counselor who is one of the nursing faculty.

The Houston Chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nursing has funds available for Awards and Scholarships for assistance with educational advancement. Criteria for selection include chapter membership (there is a category for student membership).

When funds are available, the Black Nurses Association offers scholarships on a one-time basis.  Requirements for consideration are:

• Enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing (PhD, MSN, BSN, or AD)
• In good academic standing in that School of Nursing at the time of application
• Have at least one full year of school remaining
• Involved in extracurricular and/or organization activities, such as church, nursing organization, Health and Wellness, or community activities
• An active member of the Black Nurses Association of Greater Houston (BNAGH) and National Black Nurses Association (NBNA).

Must provide:

• Official transcripts from current school of nursing
• Complete Scholarship Application — see form 1 on BNAGH website
• One letter of recommendation from a faculty member at the applicant’s school of nursing — see form 2 on BNAGH website
• An essay of 300 words or less — see instructions on BNAGH website
• A clear/clean professional picture (headshot or passport-size picture is adequate)
• Documented evidence of at least four (4) hours of extracurricular and/or organizational activities

Bold.org recently announced new nursing scholarships for any students passionate about nursing and pursuing a career in the field.  All of these scholarships will be awarded to students who show prowess not only in their nursing studies/career but in their ambition to achieve in the field. Through these opportunities, they hope to support more equitable opportunities and a diverse future in nursing to promote the well-being of all people in the US.

Undergraduate scholarships are available to students currently enrolled in a state-approved nursing program leading to an associate degree, baccalaureate, diploma, direct-entry master’s degree, RN to BSN/MSN completion, LPN/LVN to RN, or accelerated programs.  Funds are not available for graduate study unless it is for a first degree in nursing.

Criteria include:

• Pre-nursing students taking courses to prepare for matriculation into a nursing program
• Attending classes and taking no less than six (6) credits per semester
• Involvement in student nursing organizations and/or community health activities
• Document academic achievement
• Establish financial need
• U.S. Citizen or Alien with U.S. Permanent Resident Status/Alien Registration Number

The Healthcare and Nursing Education Foundation (HNEF) supports the Greater Houston Metropolitan area’s healthcare resources by awarding scholarships to nursing students, and by providing high-impact program grants in health and human services-related fields. More information on HNEF can be found at www.hnef.org.

The purpose of the HNEF Scholarship Program is to provide academic financial assistance to individuals who demonstrate the desire and ability to pursue a professional nursing career in the Greater Houston community and who have demonstrated financial need.

Scholarships are awarded to support studies toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or advanced nursing degree and are based on academics, leadership ability, community involvement, financial need, and commitment to pursuing a nursing career.  Students selected may be awarded up to $2,500 or $3,000 per semester to be used for tuition, fees, and books.  Recipients MUST be granted admission into OR currently attending a nursing program in one of the Greater Houston area schools, including Houston Christian University.

The Nurse Corps Scholarship Program enables students accepted or enrolled in a diploma, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate nursing program, including an RN to BSN Bridge Program, to receive funding for tuition, fees, and other educational costs in exchange for working at an eligible Critical Shortage Facility upon graduation. Eligible applicants will demonstrate the following:

• US citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
• Enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a professional nursing degree program at an accredited school of nursing located in the US
• Begin classes no later than September 30
• Free from any federal judgment liens
• Free from existing service commitments
• Not delinquent on a Federal debt

One-time awards are provided by the Hispanic Nurses Association, Houston Chapter. Scholarships are awarded once a year beginning in the fall semester and are based on academic achievement, financial need, involvement in school and community activities, and counselor/teacher recommendations.

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

• Hispanic background
• U.S. Citizenship
• GPA >2.5
• Evidence of financial need
• Enrolled in a minimum of nine hours in an accredited Texas college/university
• Nursing major

The MHMCH Volunteer Service Scholarship Fund is administered by the trustees of the scholarship fund. To apply, a student must be currently enrolled in the human healthcare field and attending an accredited college or university. The scholarship is a one-time monetary award that is sent directly to the school to be used only for tuition, fees, and books.

Applications are accepted by October 1 and March 1.  Application forms are available on the Memorial Hermann website.

NAHN Scholarships are awarded annually to active NANH members enrolled in accredited LVN/PN, Associate, Diploma, Baccalaureate, and Graduate nursing programs for the following academic year.  Scholarship recipients are a select group of nursing students who demonstrate promise of professional contributions to the nursing profession and who have the potential to act as role models for other aspiring nursing students.  Information on the scholarship and application process is available at nahnet.org.

Eligibility requirements–All applicants must be:

• NAHN members in good standing before the application deadline.  To become a NAHN member, visit the membership page and click the Join Now button
• Attending/enrolled in an accredited full-time nursing program.

Application requirements include:

• 2 letters of recommendation (preferably from faculty members of the school in which the student is enrolled) uploaded into the online application.  Letters must include the student’s name and list the scholarship for which the student is applying.
• Transcripts showing the student is currently enrolled in a nursing program.  The applicant may upload a digital PDF copy of official transcripts or have official transcripts mailed to NAHN by the application deadline.  Students enrolled in the first semester of a nursing program who do not yet have transcripts can upload transcripts from the past school or program.  If digital copies of transcripts are included with the application, selected scholarship recipients will be asked to send official transcripts to NAHN from their university.

• Abbott Scholarship Fund--which focuses on improving representation from diverse populations in clinical trials to reduce health disparities and improve understanding of the impact the next generation of healthcare therapies has across all populations.  Abbott offers scholarships for future trial leaders to support training and education for the future leaders of clinical trials.  The scholarship program is designed to: support minority nursing students who will go on to support the trials and process or function as clinical research coordinators; expose more minority nursing students to the research process; and develop the next generation of caregivers who can break down barriers to clinical trials in their communities.
• Suncrest Cares Foundation — NAHN Scholarship Program:  Is based on Suncrest Hospice’s mission to support, uplift, and advance the care of patients and their families through better education for healthcare workers.  NAHN and Suncrest Cares work together to provide opportunities to nursing students to benefit the communities both organizations serve.  The Suncrest Cares Foundation-NAHN Scholarship program provides scholarships to students pursuing nursing at the undergraduate and graduate levels, who exemplify a dedication to service within their community, and a desire to expand that service by way of a a career in nursing.

The US Navy provides a sign-on bonus to qualified student nursing applicants.

Members of racially marginalized groups make up a disproportionately small number of nurses in the profession.  While members of marginalized groups made up about 40% of the U.S. population in 2019, a 2017 National Nursing Workforce survey indicates that these individuals represent only about 19.2% of registered nurses (RNs). Many aspiring nurses hesitate to attend school for a variety of reasons, including cost. RNs need either an associate’s or bachelor’s degree to earn licensure, and both degrees can cost tens of thousands of dollars in tuition.

Nurse Journal provides a list that outlines some scholarships and grants for marginalized nursing students: Financial Aid for Marginalized Students.

As funds are available, the Houston Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society awards scholarships for students expressing interest in oncology nursing.  Information on this scholarship can be found at https://communities.ons.org/houston/browse/announcements.

The criteria for selection are as follows:

• Provide one (1) nursing faculty recommendation
• Express interest or demonstrate clinical practice in oncology in a paragraph
• Submit application by mid-March deadline

Travel Nurse Across America (TNAA) accepts applications for enrollment in nursing programs.  TNAA offers Nursing Scholarships for BSN Degrees.  Applicants are encouraged to apply on their website, Travel Nurse Across America. TNAA awards this biannual scholarship to one individual each semester.  The website automatically updates when a new application is made available.

Eligibility requirements for the scholarship are:

• Must provide proof of active enrollment and present transcripts of full-time enrollment in a BSN program and
• Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

The University Area Rotary Club of Houston (RCUA) is awarding nursing scholarships to full-time students at accredited nursing schools in the Texas Medical Center (including Houston Christian University) based on financial need, scholarship, and dedication to the nursing profession. Scholarships are awarded to selected students based on the completion of volunteer work with the RCUA each semester.  Candidates must be enrolled in a program leading to a nursing degree and must be accepted into a nursing program. The application is posted on their Chapter website. The selection committee meets in August to review the applications, and students will be notified of their awards the first week of September.  The award recipients are required to complete two community service/volunteer activities with RCUA to receive the second semester check in January.

Watermark offers Women in STEM scholarships for the fall academic terms to provide much-needed support for college students pursuing Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)-related studies and careers.

Two students will be selected from the pool of applicants, and awardees will each receive funds to help continue their education. Learn more information and apply for Watermark scholarships.
