This Week's Review: A Stay-at-Home Weekend

Even if I hadn’t come down with a stomach ailment, the weekend of January 26 looked bleak. I had no interest in “The Kid Who Would Be King”; I was never fond of Disney’s “The Sword in the Stone,” and this one appeared equally inane. To be honest, I have to admit that, even as a child, I was picky about Arthurian films. I can remember joining my father in derisive laughter when we saw Robert Taylor in “Knights of the Round Table” in the early 1950s. The only Arthurian film that has ever come close to the original tales is “Excalibur,” and even it has major flaws.

Even if I had not been grounded by that pesky virus, it would have been almost impossible to catch “The Challenger Disaster.” The only theater showing the HBU-related film is too far away and the late-night showings made the film virtually unattainable. I hope it does well.

One good thing I can note is that many of the Oscar-nominated films have reappeared in local theaters. Now is a good time to catch up on any you missed.
