Houston Christian University (HCU), in collaboration with KPRC 2 Community, hosted a successful blood drive on Tuesday, April 29, demonstrating the power of community action and campus engagement in saving lives.
The annual blood drive, held on HCU’s campus, resulted in the collection of 30 units of blood—enough to potentially save up to 90 lives, according to the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. The event exceeded last year’s drive in terms of donations, drawing participation from HCU students, faculty, staff and alumni committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Michael Iliopoulos, Marketing Manager for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, applauded the initiative and emphasized the importance of mobile blood drives in sustaining the regional supply.
“We need a thousand blood donations every day, so we can’t rely solely on fixed donation sites,” said Iliopoulos. “University drives are especially important because young donors are eager to get involved and give back to their communities. This is a powerful way to do just that.”
Among those who donated was HCU alumna and Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions Kaelyn Charles, who earned a bachelor of science in nursing from HCU in 2021.
“I just feel for the people who are in emergency situations,” Charles said. “I feel like it’s just the right thing to do.”
Current HCU students echoed similar sentiments. Emmanuel Aguila, a social work major, said he was proud to participate after first donating blood in high school.
“It makes me feel good knowing my blood could go to someone who really needs it,” he said. “Even indirectly, I get to help.”
Freshman Sarah Hilliard, studying special education, was inspired by how something so simple could make such a lasting impact.
“It only takes a few minutes out of your day, but it can make a huge difference in someone’s life,” Hilliard shared. “It really touched me.”
Nursing student Madeline Gaiser added, “Giving blood is a simple act that can have a huge impact. It helps people who’ve been in accidents, had surgeries, or are battling diseases. Plus, it’s a way to give back to your community and potentially save a life! That’s why I think giving blood is so important.”
The event marked another step forward in HCU’s commitment to service and community engagement. The University expressed its gratitude to KPRC 2 Community and the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center for their continued partnership.
