Houston Christian University Police Department held a special swearing-in ceremony on Sept. 21, 2026, in Belin Chapel in the McNair Cultural Arts Center, to welcome two new officers to the department.
HCU Police Chief John Karshner swore in new officer Daryl Smith and returning officer Chris Hess. Their swearing-in represents more than the beginning of a new job—it marks a commitment to serve, protect and uphold the Constitution and the laws of the State of Texas.
Karshner shared a heartfelt story of his journey into law enforcement, describing police work as a “calling” that requires courage, integrity, sound judgment and a willingness to stand firm when others may need to step away. As newly hired officers, Smith and Hess accept the responsibility to protect the HCU community and to faithfully carry out the duties entrusted to them.
With their right hand on the bible, each officer took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the State of Texas and to serve and faithfully discharge the duties of a HCU police officer.
Karshner, assisted by Sgt. John Camarillo, welcomed the new law enforcement officers to the HCU Police Department and during the ceremony invited Director of Veteran & Military Services Cody Harrington to welcome the new officers.
“We are grateful for their commitment to service and wish them every success as they begin this important calling,” said Karshner.
