The Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) is an integrated approach to Christian theological graduate education designed to prepare students for enhanced ministry, both lay and vocational, in their churches, and to prepare those who want to pursue further graduate study. In addition, we have a number of students in the program with non-theological vocational callings who study with us to enrich their own spiritual journey.

Overview of the Online Master's in Theology

Coursework exposes students to key questions and concerns in the fields of biblical studies, theology and practical ministry. We value and draw from our Baptist heritage, but our faculty and students represent a range of evangelical traditions and denominations. Thus, we welcome anyone who would wish to study with us. Drawing from our specific focus on the Bible, graduates of the MATS program from HCU can responsibly bring the ancient texts of Christian Scripture into dialogue with historical, theological, and contemporary concerns.

Distinctions of the Theology Online Degree

Our Theology online degree still allows for close interaction with experienced faculty in small, seminar-style classes. Students in the Theology Masters online program will be personally challenged to grow intellectually and spiritually as servant leaders. Our Theology Masters online classes still allow us to get to know you personally.  Online students discuss texts together in community, allowing us all to learn from the diverse ministry experiences of those in the classroom. This encourages deeper engagement with texts and ideas, and it prepares online students for PhD discussion seminars.

Program Admissions Requirements

  1. Official Transcripts – Official transcripts should be sent directly to OnlineVerification@HC.edu from the college or university that awarded your bachelor’s degree. Transcripts from any additional coursework since that time should also be submitted.
  2. Personal Statement– Please submit a personal statement, between 300 and 500 words, sharing your desire to attend the HCU Online Graduate School and how you feel a degree from HCU will assist you in your academic and professional careers.
  3. Résumé/CV – Email a current resumé or CV to OnlineVerification@HC.edu
