Minor in History
The 12-hour History minor at Houston Christian University provides a foundation in historical reasoning while developing crucial analytical and communication skills. Through direct engagement with both primary sources and classic and contemporary research, students cultivate the ability to read widely, think deeply, reason persuasively and communicate with clarity.
Course Requirements
This program combines foundational coursework in research methods with focused study in both U.S. and world history.
Students will take the remaining of the following courses not taken in the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum or their school/college core:
- Western Civilization I
- Western Civilization II
- US History to 1877
- US History from 1877
Additional required courses and electives:
- HIST 3303: Introduction to Scholarly Research
- One World History course (3000 or 4000 level)
- One U.S. History course (3000 or 4000 level)
- One additional History course (3000 or 4000 level)
Through analysis of primary documents, mastery of chronological thinking and practice in constructing evidence-based arguments, students develop stronger analytical and critical thinking skills applicable across many fields. This combination of historical knowledge and analytical ability proves particularly valuable for students majoring in law, business, education, journalism and other disciplines where understanding human behavior and societal development is beneficial.
