Teaching Focus

Dr. Horn specializes in teaching microbiology and molecular biology and its interactions with our world.  Committed to nurturing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in her students, she has incorporated teaching strategies for these in her courses.  Her Microbiology course includes an undergraduate research component.  Many of her students have presented their findings at the HCU Symposium held each spring.  She strives to foster an interest in the study of life (biology), to support her students in their quest for knowledge, and to encourage them to be life-long learners.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Horn was honored with the HCU Opal Goolsby Award for Teaching Excellence in 1999 and 2014.  She also received recognition as HCU’s Faculty Woman of the Year in 1999.  Her students have honored her several times with recognition in Who’s Who Among American Teachers. In 2005, Dr. Horn was the Piper Nominee from the College of Science and Math.  In 2007, Dr Horn was named as HCU’s Outstanding Advisor of the Year.  She was awarded the National Academic Advising Association’s (NACADA) Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Faculty Advising in 2007.
