“The Blue Angels” provides unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the prestigious U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron during their 2022 season.  This documentary is for anyone who loves planes and/or has ever dreamed of being a fighter pilot.  There is nothing better than seeing the Blue Angels perform live and make their mind-blowing flying maneuvers look effortless.  From the ground, the F-18 jets appear as if they are locked in a flawless flight pattern.  From the cockpit via cameras mounted in and on the jets themselves, viewers can see the actual turbulence and challenges of flying these amazing aerial acrobatics.

Directed by Paul Crowder and produced by an all-star team, including Glen Powell and J.J. Abrams, the film immerses viewers in the intense training, grueling schedules, and awe-inspiring aerial maneuvers of the Blue Angels.  Filmed with cutting-edge IMAX cameras, including the first-ever civilian aircraft permitted to fly inside the performance “box,” the visuals put audiences in the cockpit to experience the thrilling speeds as well as slow motion video of the F-18s up close.

Beyond capturing the thrilling flight sequences, the documentary also explores the teamwork, passion, and commitment required to be a Blue Angel.  This includes the selection process for new pilots and support staff, including their demanding training schedules enduring extreme G-forces, and the emotional farewells as veterans depart and new members take their place.  The film culminates with an in-depth look at Amanda Lee who made history as the first female pilot to fly as a Blue Angel.

With insights from the pilots, crew and former members, “The Blue Angels” pays tribute to the extraordinary individuals who make up the squadron while highlighting their mission to inspire the next generation.  The motto of the Blue Angels is: Once a Blue Angel, always a Blue Angel.  I would suggest that for those who are blessed to see the Blue Angels perform in person, once a Blue Angel fan, always a Blue Angel fan!  So too, this fascinating documentary will lead viewers to a much greater appreciation and respect for these incredible Navy pilots.
