Community Connections; Empowering Partnerships

The News Magazine of HCU

Houston Christian University (HCU) has long been a beacon of academic excellence and Christian values. But HCU’s impact extends far beyond the classroom walls. Through a vibrant network of community partnerships, the University is leaving a positive footprint across the Houston area.

A media partnership with KPRC 2 is a key driver of the ongoing initiative. The collaboration allows HCU to come together with other businesses and highlight worthy nonprofit organizations during KPRC’s broadcasts. In December, the spotlight shone on Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a group dedicated to building beds for children in need. This exposure not only benefits the non-profit but also showcases HCU’s commitment to social responsibility. HCU’s dedication to giving back expands each month. Every month, a new organization is selected and receives the support of community partners, including Energy Transfer and Exclusive Furniture.

This varied outreach has included such groups as David’s Legacy, which aids families battling bullying, and Ronald McDonald House Charities, offering comfort to families with sick children. Organizations like Elijah Rising, focused on ending human trafficking, and Clear the Shelters, promoting pet adoption, have also benefited from the HCU/KPRC partnership.

Beyond local charities, HCU understands the importance of supporting the Houston area’s infrastructure. Last November, the University sponsored the Greater Houston Partnership’s State of Education luncheon, demonstrating a commitment to the future of Houston’s youth. Similarly, sponsoring the Katy Christian Chamber of Commerce signifies HCU’s desire to be a strong community partner in the region’s vibrant business landscape.

The University’s impact is further amplified through on campus participation initiatives. The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center’s blood donation coach has made regular visits to campus, ensuring a steady supply of life-saving blood. Additionally, HCU students actively volunteer with organizations like USVets, Bear (Be a Resource) supporting foster care youth, Harrison’s Heroes, which aids families facing pediatric cancer, and Operation Turkey, providing Thanksgiving meals to the underprivileged.

In a light departure from more serious community initiatives, KSBJ teamed up with HCU to host an “Ice

Cream Emergency” on campus last summer. Scoops of the tasty treat served as a sweet escape from the blistering heat, fostering a fun community atmosphere.

These partnerships are a two-way street. While HCU provides vital support, the University also benefits from the positive brand recognition it receives. By actively engaging with the community, HCU reinforces its core values of service and compassion. The message is clear: HCU isn’t just an educational institution; it’s a caring neighbor, deeply invested in the well-being of the Houston area.

As HCU continues to forge new partnerships, its impact on the community can only grow. The University’s commitment to its faith is beautifully complemented by its dedication to serving others. This is the true essence of a Christ-centered education – one that equips students not only with academic knowledge but also with the compassion to make a positive difference in the world.
