VALOR is Houston Christian University’s peer-to-peer mentorship program designed specifically for military-affiliated students. Through intentional relationships, academic coaching, and proactive outreach, VALOR connects incoming veterans and military-connected students with trained upper-class mentors who understand both military culture and college success. Our goal is simple: ensure every military student feels supported, connected, and equipped to thrive.

What is the VALOR program?

Personal Peer Mentorship

At Houston Christian University, mentoring goes beyond academics. VALOR is grounded in HCU’s Christ-centered mission, helping students rediscover identity, purpose, and calling as they move from military service into civilian leadership.

Each participating student is matched with a trained VALOR mentor who provides:

  • Goal setting and transition planning
  • Course selection and registration support
  • Grade check-ins and accountability
  • Study strategies and time management tools
  • Resource navigation across campus
  • Personal encouragement and connection

Mentors meet with students in person and maintain regular check-ins throughout the semester.
