Culture Influencers: Nancy Pearcey

May 15, 2016

Nancy Pearcey, professor of Apologetics and scholar in residence, was invited to deliver the annual lecture for Denver Seminary’s Gordon Lewis Center. She spoke on “Finding Truth: How the Bible Teaches Critical Thinking,” and at luncheon the following day, addressed “Arguing for Sexual Truth in a Secular Age.” That evening she also spoke at Horizon Christian Fellowship in Denver. In addition, Pearcey published two articles for John Piper’s Website, Desiring God, “One Strategy to Rule Them All: How to Answer Skeptics from Romans 1” and “The Bait-and-Switch over Same-Sex ‘Marriage’.” In media, Pearcey was invited to appear on Breitbart News during the Values Voter Summit, and on various Christian programs: Gino Geraci on Crosswalk, John Clemens on the Clemens Report, David Wheaton on The Christian Worldview, and a podcast interview with Michael Easley, former president of Moody Bible Institute. She did print interviews that appeared in Apologetics for Parents and in ByFaith, in both the online and the print versions. Pearcy also has signed a contract with David C. Cook to write a new book on life and sexuality issues and has also been published on the subject in the Christian Post, and in mainstream media such as The Daily Caller and The American Thinker.

Published Reviews of the book

“A powerful book … Brings Pearcey’s unique and uniquely-helpful voice to crucial issues.”
–Tim Challies, Challies.com

“Important … Passionate … Brilliant. Like no other book I’ve read, Love Thy Body draws out and exposes the faulty worldview upon which abortion, euthanasia, the hookup culture, gay marriage, and transgenderism rest.
–Louis Markos, Reformation21

“Timely … Well researched … Reading Love Thy Body was a sort of Matrix moment for me which opened my eyes to see what’s going on in our world in a new light. It is an essential tool for understanding and engaging with our culture’s views on humanity and morality.”
–Tim Arndt, Apologetics315

“Pearcey’s analysis shines … She turns the tables by showing that it is secularists who reject the physical world and the body. How? By exalting consciousness or feelings above the body. They want to choose their identity, no matter how much it conflicts with physical reality.”
–Richard Weikart, The Stream

“Takes us back to see the bigger picture … A very practical book that reminds us of the importance of ideas, and how bad ideas can harm us so very much. But the book is one of hope as well. It not only demolishes faulty worldview thinking, but it points the way forward.”
–Bill Muehlenberg, Culture Watch

“Unique … Puts its finger squarely on the problem … Pearcey’s central thesis is that the core of our differences over sexual matters stem from an unspoken, radically opposed anthropology–that is, a deep-seated disagreement over what makes a person a person.”
–Jimmy Young, The Gospel Coalition

“Love Thy Body is riveting, challenging, educational, a shot to the heart, a challenge for the mind, and bold push for the feet. It will spark controversy.”
–David Steele, Servants of Grace

“With clarity and compassion … shines much-needed light on the most pressing category of confusing ideologies today, the sexual ones. Think of it as a training guide for comprehensive, clear thinking about the biological and sexual deconstructivist movements of our day.”
–Terrell Clemmons, Cross Examined.org

“A former agnostic, Pearcey looks at what she calls the ‘dehumanizing impact’ of secularist views of the body, biology, and sexuality, making a case for how Christianity teaches a holistic view of each.”
–Publisher’s Weekly Preview

“Loving, caring, and compassionate…Cuts to the Truth… A ringing alarm calling for change, a resource for generations to come, and a practical guide to ‘Loving Thy Body.'”
–Jason Kline, Bellator Christi

June 15, 2019

HBU Apologetics Professor Nancy Pearcey is exploring taboo issues and the ideas that have become culturally normative tenets in her latest book, “Love Thy Body: Answering Hard Questions about Life and Sexuality.” With a combination of reason, boldness, real-life stories and her characteristic tenderness, Pearcey brings common sense and biblical application to matters like abortion, assisted suicide, transgenderism and homosexuality.

While many have adopted the creed that morality is a matter of personal preference, the doctrine of self-determination is fraught with snares. In “Love Thy Body,” Pearcey goes past the surface assumptions and exposes the ramifications of secular and sacred belief systems. The message of the book has resonated, and has resulted in opportunities for her to speak in many forums including national and international radio and television shows, the Heritage Foundation (the nation’s largest conservative think tank), C-SPAN and even to members of the US Congress in the Capitol Building in Washington, DC.

“People are so hungry to get answers that go beyond the soundbites,” she said. “I’m digging deeper and looking at the worldview – your ethics depend upon your worldview and what it means to be human.”

In spite of connotations of liberation from stuffy rules, the move away from a biblical perspective has led to a lower view of humanity, Pearcey said. “The secular, liberal worldview is demeaning to human dignity and denies human rights,” she said. “Take abortion. Most bioethicists agree that life begins at conception – that the fetus is human. But they say it’s not a person until it achieves a certain level of cognitive functioning. The implication is that as long as the fetus is ’merely’ human, it has no rights. It can be killed for any reason or no reason. It can be used for research and experiments, tinkered with genetically, picked through for sellable body parts (as Planned Parenthood does), then tossed out with the other medical waste. In other words, being human is no longer the basis for human rights. This is a very negative view of what it means to be human.”

Pearcey continued, “Support for euthanasia uses the same reasoning in reverse: It says if you lose a certain level of cognitive functioning, you’re no longer a person — even though you are obviously still human. At that point, you can be unplugged, your treatment stopped, your food and water withheld, and your organs transplanted. Again, being human is not enough for human rights. This is very dehumanizing.”

This split or division between being human versus being a person explains a host of other cutting-edge issues as well, Pearcey noted. “Take homosexuality, for example. It, too, rests on a divided view of the human being that denigrates the body. Think of it this way: on the level of biology, physiology and anatomy, no one really denies that males and females are counterparts to one another. That’s how the human sexual and reproductive system is designed,” she said. “To embrace a same-sex identity, then, is to contradict that design. Implicitly you are saying, ’Why should my body have any say in my moral choices? Why should my biological identity as male or female form the basis for my psychological identity?’ This is a very disrespectful view of the body.”

The denigration of the body is even more obvious in the transgender movement, Pearcey said. “Arguments for transgenderism explicitly say my biological identity is completely dissociated from my authentic self. A BBC documentary says at the heart of the debate is the idea that the mind can be ’at war with the body.’ And when that happens, the mind wins,” she said. “But why accept such a low view of the body? Why not try to recover a higher view? I recently read an interview with a 14-year-old girl who had lived for three years as a trans boy, then embraced her identity as a girl again. She said the turning point came when she realized it was okay to ’learn to love my body.’ The antidote to transgenderism is learning to love your body.”

Such conversations go far beyond the simple truisms that many are taught in church. Pearcey knows she’s not alone in searching for answers to the complex questions that present themselves. In multiple surveys, youth have indicated that they left the faith simply because no one around them could satisfactorily answer their tough questions, she said.

That’s a dilemma that is all too familiar for Pearcey. She grew up in a Lutheran home where the message of salvation wasn’t scratching her intellectual itch. “I asked a Christian professor once point-blank, ’Why are you a Christian?’ He said, ’Works for me.’ I asked a seminary dean about how he knew the faith is true, and he said, ’Don’t worry; we all have doubts sometimes.’ I decided that Christianity must not have any good reasons,” she said. “And if you don’t have good reasons for something, you shouldn’t believe it — whether Christianity or anything else.”

Having spent part of her childhood in Germany, Pearcey returned to Europe in the early 70s. She was soon drawn into the group of other searchers in theologian and evangelist Francis Schaeffer’s home in Switzerland called “L’Abri,” which means “the shelter.” Pearcey and many others had been delving in drugs to expand their consciousness, and looking for answers to the questions that had never been satisfied.

“At age 16, I had pulled books off the philosophy shelves looking for answers. I pretty rapidly realized that if there is no God, there is no foundation for ethics, or truth, or meaning to life. We’re on a rock flying through empty space,” she said. “At L’Abri, I found Christianity appealing because I had never encountered apologetics before. Here were people who actually understood the secular philosophies I had immersed myself in. They could even help me ask better questions!”

“L’Abri was so attractive that I was afraid I might become a Christian before I was intellectually convinced. So, I fled, and went back to the States,” she said. But in her time with the Schaeffers, Pearcey had discovered other apologist writers like C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton. In her own study of the theological giants she had been introduced to, Pearcey became utterly convinced that Christianity was true. Hungry for a Christian family to help her grow in the faith, she went back to Switzerland for four months.

Since that time, Pearcey’s compelling motivation has been to help others like the seeker she was. “Teaching apologetics is my heart and soul – that’s how I became a Christian,” she said. “What really drives me the most is helping people answer these questions. I love teaching and interacting with students.”

As a professor, Pearcey knows that students at many institutions are presented with psychological arguments against their faith, such as the idea that God is a social construction by people who never grew out of the need for a father figure. “My long-term goal is a book on how to stay Christian in college,” she said. “I had one student who told me after going to graduate school elsewhere, ’If I hadn’t taken your class, I might have lost my faith because they sure do make secular ideas sound persuasive.’”

While the message of the Gospel is foundational, Christian teaching would do well to go further into the application of all the Bible presents. Some Christian faith traditions focus so much on the conversion experience that they fail to engage the whole person, Pearcey said. “Evangelicalism has been marked by an anti-intellectualism at times that has made people afraid to ask the hard questions,” she said. “The Bible applies to all areas of philosophy. It’s as comprehensive as any other worldview, and is meant to pertain to every part of life.”

A two-time winner of the ECPA Gold Medallion Award, Nancy R. Pearcey has been hailed in The Economist as “America’s preeminent evangelical Protestant female intellectual.” A bestselling author and speaker, Pearcey is a professor of Apologetics and the scholar-in-residence at HBU. She is editor at large of “The Pearcey Report,” and a fellow at Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture. Her past books include “How Now Shall We Live?” co-authored with Chuck Colson and Harold Fickett, “Total Truth,” “The Soul of Science” and “Saving Leonardo.”

Museum of the Bible Features Interview with Nancy Pearcey in Latest Exhibit

Nancy Pearcey, Professor of Apologetics and Scholar in Residence at Houston Christian University (HCU), shares insights on Imago Dei, a term that means “the image of God” as a part of the opening of the Museum of the Bible’s latest exhibit, “Scripture and Science: Our Universe, Ourselves, Our Place.”

The exhibit seeks to spur dialogue about life’s biggest questions by posing six essential questions: How did it all begin? What keeps the universe running? How did life begin? What makes me human? What can we accomplish? How will it all end? It also explores the Bible’s role in the historical relationship between science and religion in a world where many believe that religious faith and the natural sciences are very separate subjects and where the Bible is viewed by many as an obstacle to scientific progress, according to exhibit curators.

A renowned scholar of apologetics and Christian worldview, Pearcey, one of several scholars interviewed as a part of the exhibit, was asked to address the question of the image of God and how that is the foundation for what it means to be human.  She also spoke about the cultural mandate, and how it provides inspiration for “What we can accomplish?”

An excerpt of Pearcey’s interview is now part of the museum’s “Scripture and Science” exhibit.  Her biblical insights on the topic of the “Image of God,” recorded in HCU’s Dunham Bible Museum, are provided below.

  • “In the ancient world, it was rulers and emperors who were sometimes said to be “the image of God”—which meant the representative of God on earth. So what Genesis was saying was that we are all royalty. The early readers of Genesis knew the text was making the astonishing claim that all humans, not just rulers, have the dignity of being representatives of God on earth.
  • This is an amazingly positive message of human worth and dignity. In the religions of the ancient world, the gods did not endow humans with dignity. For example, the ancient Babylonian creation story says the gods created humans to be their slaves.
  • It was only the book of Genesis that said humans were endowed with unique status and worth. They alone were shaped in God’s image; they alone had responsibility for stewardship over the rest of creation.
  • God is the Creator, but human beings are to act as God’s image by being sub-creators. They are to investigate the natural world God created and learn how to use its properties to be productive, to invent new technologies—in short, all the arts and sciences.
  • So, the image of God means human beings were given the task of being stewards and cultivators of God’s creation, to discover and delight in his handiwork.
  • This passage of Genesis is often called the cultural mandate because it tells us that the ideal human existence is not an endless vacation but to expend creative effort in work. To fulfill our gifts in meaningful vocations. To build civilizations. To make history.”

Pearcey has authored hundreds of articles appearing in outlets such as Fox News, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Daily Caller, The American Enterprise, American Thinker, Human Life Review, and numerous more. She also has co-authored a column in Christianity Today and served as a columnist for Human Events.

Nancy Pearcey, professor of apologetics and scholar in residence at Houston Christian University (HCU), spoke on a panel at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. The Heritage Foundation has been ranked among the most influential public policy organizations in the nation.

Pearcey was asked to speak on her latest book, “The Toxic War on Masculinity,” addressing the role of fathers in solving today’s boy crisis.  Other speakers on the panel included Christina Hoff Sommers, author of The War Against Boys and Senior Fellow Emeritus at the American Enterprise Institute, along with Henry Olsen, Senior Fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Panelists discussed the nature and consequences of this significant crisis, as well as solutions to help alleviate the plight of our boys and men.

Our boys and men are languishing. Many are deprived of a father at the earliest stages of life, and they often lag in schools and universities. Growing numbers of men have been exiting the workforce since the 60s. This apparent vicious cycle has stripped so many men of purpose and the ability to flourish. What’s more, the boy crisis likely threatens the future of family formation in America and around the world.

The presentation was recorded by C-SPAN.  This is Pearcey’s third C-SPAN presentation. All three presentations can be watched at https://www.c-span.org/person/?112931/NancyPearcey.

Pearcey holds the Elizabeth and John Gibson Chair of Apologetics at HCU and is the author of several bestselling, award-winning books, including “Total Truth and Love Thy Body.”

HCU Professor of Apologetics and Scholar-in-Residence Nancy Pearcey was a featured panelist at  the National Radio Broadcasters (NRB) 2024 International Christian Media Convention, held Feb. 20 – 23, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Celebrating the NRB’s 80th anniversary, the annual convention is described as “the world’s largest gathering of Christian communicators and ministry professionals.” Participants learn hands-on-skills through a variety of keynotes, workshops and panel discussions from over 100 speakers.

Pearcey spoke on the “Faith, Fatherhood and Masculinity” panel, drawing from her latest book, “The Toxic War on Masculinity: How Christianity Reconciles the Sexes.” The panel was hosted by Lauren Green, chief religion correspondent for Fox News.

Remarks from the panel were featured in an article by Zachary Mettler in the Daily Citizen, a Focus on the Family publication,

While at the conference, Pearcey shared insights from her panel discussion with James Dobson’s “Family Talk” radio program and several other media outlets.
