Program Overview and Requirements for the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction for Bilingual Elementary Educators

This program leads to both the MEd degree in Curriculum and Instruction and EC-6 Bilingual teacher certification. This certification permits one to teach all subjects in a Bilingual education classroom from early childhood through grade six. The HCU program is field-based and requires that students spend time in elementary schools. If a student is interested in clinical (student) teaching, then it involves working all day for 12-15 weeks in a elementary school classroom.

In addition to this coursework (with no grade lower than a C) and successful completion of the comprehensive exams, certification requires clinical (student) teaching or an approved equivalent and successful completion of state certification exams.

Throughout the program, graduate students develop knowledge and skills through working with students and teachers in Bilingual elementary school settings. The College of Education has close ties with area schools and school districts. This relationship with area schools means that students benefit from the practical experiences and the professional opportunities available. Most graduates are employed in Houston-area schools. Employment opportunities vary according to teaching field.
