Program Overview and Requirements for the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction for Elementary Educators

The HCU Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with EC-6 Certification program is field-based and requires that students spend time in elementary schools. If a student is interested in clinical (student) teaching, then it involves working all day for 12-15 weeks in an elementary school classroom.

In addition to this coursework (with no grade lower than a C) and successful completion of the comprehensive exams, certification requires clinical (student) teaching or an approved equivalent and successful completion of state certification exams.

The graduate program in Curriculum and Instruction in Early Childhood through Grade 6 leads both to the MEd degree and to state certification in Early Childhood through sixth grade.

Throughout the program, graduate students develop knowledge and skills through working with students and teachers in elementary school settings. The College of Education has close ties with area schools and school districts. This relationship with area schools means that students benefit from the practical experiences and the professional opportunities available. Most graduates are employed in Houston-area schools. Employment opportunities vary according to the teaching field.
