Spiritual Life on Campus: March

“What is the meaning of Lent?”

Lent is a period of fasting, moderation, and self-denial traditionally observed by Catholics and some Protestant denominations. It begins with Ash Wednesday and ends with Easter Sunday. The length of the Lenten fast was established in the 4th century as 46 days (40 days, not counting Sundays). During Lent, participants eat sparingly or give up a particular food or habit. This is a wonderful time to reflect on your own walk with the Lord Jesus and the price he paid leading to and through the crucifixion. As we prepare our hearts and lives to celebrate His resurrection on Easter Sunday, may we anticipate His transforming power in our own lives through His Love and Grace.

Our Catholic Student Association (CSA) sponsored our Ash Wednesday Service at HCU. Rev. Bob Hebert presided over the prayer service. Deacon Bob serves at St. Clare of Assisi parish in Houston. HCU faculty, staff and students participated and were blessed and challenged during the service.

During this time of Lent, we opened with convocation on Ash Wednesday. Our guest speaker was Kevin Phillips with For All Mankind Movement (FAMM). We had 14 of our students make public decisions to follow Christ, of which 7 were for salvation and made Jesus the Lord of their lives.

We will cap the Lenten Season leading into Easter with our Passion Ignite Conference April 16-18. This will include a Passover Seder Meal and 4 worship services. Our special guest speaker will be Dr. Robert Smith from Beeson Divinity School, and the worship will be led by our own “Refuge” Worship Team.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept sound and blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.” – 1 Thessalonians 5: 23-24
