Dr. Saul Trevino awarded HCU’s Opal Goolsby Outstanding Teaching Award

Houston Christian University (HCU) awarded Dr. Saul Trevino the University’s 2022-2023 Opal Goolsby Outstanding Teaching Award. Dr. Trevino is a Professor of Chemistry and Program Coordinator for Chemistry in the College of Science and Engineering.  He also is a member of the Quality Enhancement Program Implementation Committee and a Content Expert in Physical Science (6-12) (Teacher Certification) & ESL. He earned a PhD in Medical Sciences from Texas A&M University System Health Science Center and a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas A&M University.

HCU Provost Dr. Stanley Napper presented the award at the University’s 2022-2023 Faculty and Staff End of the Year Celebration on May 8, 2023, in Belin Chapel. Named in honor of Opal Goolsby, a legendary faculty member who taught English and French at Houston Baptist College, the prestigious award was created to recognize the very best teaching on the HCU campus.

Dr. Napper described Opal Goolsby as “a generous and selfless teacher who loved life and commanded the best from her students.” She was a member of the College’s original faculty in 1963. Each year, a selection committee made up of members of the Student Government Association, the Faculty Professional Development Committee and the Provost’s Office, examines the record of accomplishment for each nominee and carefully chooses the faculty member who best represents the ideals of outstanding teaching.

HCU administrators, faculty and staff extended a round of applause to Dr. Trevino in honor of his selection for the prestigious award.

Other finalists for this year’s award included Dr. Greggory Keiffer,  Assistant Professor of Management, Dr. Joseph Pelletier, Associate Professor of Psychology, Dr. Nancy Pearcey, Scholar-in-Residence and Professor of Apologetics, Dr. Sarah Robins, Assistant Professor of Cinema & New Media Arts and Dr. Lou Markos, Professor of English.
