Nasya Shaffer didn’t choose Houston Christian University so much as feel pulled toward it. “I was originally drawn to HCU by the scholarship opportunity and the culture that HCU holds,” she says—and culture, it turns out, meant everything.

Still, she wavered. For months she couldn’t commit to a decision, until one night something shifted.

“I went to sleep and God gave me a dream. I was walking around campus and talking with others, and I knew from then that this was the plan God had for me.” She stopped second-guessing herself after that.

That kind of clarity tends to create momentum. Nasya arrived at HCU already knowing she wanted to be involved, she’d been that person all through high school, but her reason for showing up had sharpened.

“What always sparked my interest was that I could lead with a purpose and actually make a difference, not just hold a title.”

She found her way to the Student Government Association after attending GO, where she met two people who changed the trajectory of her year. “Haven and Bri were incredibly encouraging and made me feel like I truly had a place in SGA,” she says. “It has been history ever since.”

Now serving as Director of Public Relations, she manages the Instagram presence and shows up to campus events to put a microphone in front of students who might otherwise go unnoticed.

“I’ve learned how to capture moments that matter and make sure students feel seen and included,” she says. “It’s also helped me grow more confident in telling their stories, not just my own.”

The same drive carried her into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., though the pull there ran even deeper.

“Seeing women who look like me lead with excellence, sisterhood, and a commitment to uplifting communities really moved me,” she says. “AKA represents more than an organization. It’s a standard of leadership, grace, and giving back.”

She’s held the roles of Social Media Liaison, Vice President, and now President, and while she’s clear-eyed about the weight of it, she doesn’t seem burdened.

“It is a duty, but seeing the outcome of the impact we make definitely makes it all worth it.”

Running underneath all of it is her faith, which she describes not as background noise but as the thing that keeps her honest.

“My faith has been my foundation throughout college,” she says. “It keeps me grounded, especially during stressful or uncertain times, and reminds me of my purpose beyond achievements or titles.” When the résumé-building pressure creeps in, that’s what she comes back to.

She’ll also tell you not to underestimate Late Night Breakfast. “It’s such a special time where everyone comes together, the stress of finals fades for a moment, and you really have time to connect with your friends before that stress hits.” Some traditions earn their place.

“Houston Christian University is a place where you can truly grow into who you’re meant to be. If you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone and get involved, there are so many opportunities to lead, serve, and find your community.”

And if you’re wondering whether the investment is worth it, she already answered that.

“If you pour into HCU, it will definitely pour back into you. I know it has done exactly that for me.”
