Writing Center Guidelines

The HCU Writing Center is committed to supporting academic and research writing across various disciplines. Our Peer Tutors have strong writing skills and create a supportive learning environment by providing peer guidance. Our staff and Peer Tutors undergo ongoing professional development to stay informed about best practices in writing instruction, communication skills, and cultural competency. They are trained to work with students from diverse backgrounds and respect different writing styles and linguistic variations.

Peer Tutors provide assistance at various stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing. They emphasize the writing process and guide students in developing critical thinking, organization, and effective communication skills. Peer Tutors take a non-evaluative approach, focusing on constructive feedback and collaborative learning. They help students improve their writing skills rather than telling them what to write. Peer Tutors strive to be culturally sensitive and inclusive, maintaining the privacy of students’ work and discussions and creating a safe space for them to seek assistance without fear of judgment.

To provide services to our clients, the HCU Writing Center offers personalized one-on-one tutoring through appointments. The HCU Writing Center also organizes workshops on specific writing topics or skills. Staff may also provide online resources, handouts, and guides to support self-directed learning. Finally, the HCU Writing Center collects student feedback through surveys to continuously improve our services.

We look forward to working with you!
