Biochemistry-Molecular Biology (BS) What is Biochemistry and a Biochem Degree?

Biochemistry and molecular biology encompass the understanding of life and processes at the cellular level. Applications range from medicine to agriculture to fitness. HCU faculty from Biology, Chemistry, Math and Physics departments teach and mentor in this major. Departmental honors are available in BCMB. The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

What Does a Biochemist Do?

Biochemistry combines the scientific disciplines of biology and chemistry to study living organisms at the molecular biology level.  Biochemistry scientists perform laboratory experiments to better understand health and disease in human, plant, and animal life. Biochemists employ chemical knowledge toward solving biological and environmental problems.

Biochemistry Careers and Opportunities

The College of Science and Engineering provides the interdisciplinary training necessary to prepare students for success in careers in the biological and biochemical sciences. The Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BCMB) major incorporates the training needed for students to compete for spaces in medical school, dental school and graduate programs in the biological and biochemical sciences, in addition to entry-level employment in biomedical research at academic institutions and in the biotechnology industry. Biochemistry major graduates find meaningful employment in biochemistry and molecular biology careers, including medical scientists, environmental chemists, chemical safety experts, forensic science technicians, or chemistry professors.
