Entry Positions

Entry-level positions in the Tutoring Center provide students with the opportunity to support their peers academically while developing professional skills.  These roles are ideal for dependable, service-oriented students who are eager to contribute to campus academic success. Below is a more detailed list of entry positions.

Reports to: Senior Tutor – Academic Coach, Coordinator, & Director
Status: Student Worker
Days and Times: Flexible, with an average commitment of 5 hours per week

Position Summary: The Academic Coach works one-on-one with students to develop personalized learning strategies, foster accountability, and encourage self-reflection. By helping students align their habits with their academic and personal goals, the Academic Coach plays a vital role in promoting student success and personal growth.

Job Description
The Academic Coach will:

  • Meet one-on-one with HCU students, with a primary focus on student athletes
  • Attend bi-weekly check-in meetings with the Senior Tutor, either individually or as part of a group
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all academic coaching appointments
  • Participate in semesterly performance reviews and complete end-of-semester surveys
  • Demonstrate a commitment to positively influencing classmates’ academic success and well-being

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must attend semesterly Tutoring Center Student Leader Trainings
  • Complete 3 professional development activates each semester

Expectations:

  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible behavior
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Uphold confidentiality in all interactions with student and staff
  • Model and promote effective time management, professionalism, and study habits
  • Ability to assist students’ learning without doing the work for them

Compensation:

  • $8.25 per hour with the completion of semester training
  • Eligible for yearly raise with the completion of performance review

Special Considerations:

  • Some weekend or evening hours may occasionally be required
  • Preference will be given to student athletes, but all students with relevant qualifications are encouraged to apply

Reports to: Senior Tutor – Front Desk, Coordinator, & Director
Status: Student Worker
Days and Times: Flexible, with an average commitment of 10 hours per week between Monday- Friday from 8:00am – 9:00pm

Position Summary: The Front Desk Worker strives to be helpful and a friendly face on campus. This student-oriented position provides good customer service to students helping them any way they can.

Job Description
The Front Desk Worker will:

  • Assist students in scheduling tutoring appointments, providing campus directions, and other general assistance
  • Assist the tutors and ensure they have necessary resources to have a good tutoring session
  • Maintain a clean working area between shifts
  • Maintain the Tutoring Center clean so the students have a tidy study space
  • Attend bi-weekly check-in meetings with the Senior Tutor, either individually or as part of a group
  • Participate in semesterly performance reviews and complete end-of-semester surveys

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must attend semesterly Tutoring Center Student Leader Trainings

Expectations:

  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible behavior
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and interpersonal skills

Compensation: $7.25 per hour

  • $8.00 with a social media specialty

Status: Student Worker
Days and Times: Flexible, with an average commitment of 5 hours per week

Position Summary: The General Tutor offers students weekly availability for subject specific tutoring.

Job Description

The General Tutor will:

  • Offer at minimum five hours of availability to students
  • Offer appointments in-person and virtually
  • Offer one-on-one and group appointments
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of all tutoring appointments
  • Participate in semesterly performance reviews and complete end-of-semester surveys
  • Demonstrate a commitment to positively influencing classmates’ academic success and well-being
  • Attend bi-weekly check-in meetings with the Senior Tutor, either individually or as part of a group

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Obtained an A in the completed HCU courses tutor wishes to tutor in
  • Reference from professor for each course the tutor wishes to tutor in
  • Must attend semesterly Tutoring Center Student Leader Trainings

Expectations:

  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible behavior
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Uphold confidentiality in all interactions with student and staff
  • Model and promote effective time management, professionalism, and study habits
  • Ability to assist students’ learning without doing the work for them

Compensation:

  • $8.25 per hour with the completion of semester training
  • Eligible for yearly raise with the completion of performance review

Discloser: General Tutors are only required to work when an appointment is scheduled. Compensation is based on scheduled appointments, not general availability.

Special Considerations:

  • Some weekend or evening hours may occasionally be required
  • Priority will be given to high need subjects, but students are encouraged to list all courses they are interested in tutoring for
  • If subject requested is not required application will be saved for future semester considerations

Reports to: Professor, Senior Tutor – Supplemental Instructor, Coordinator, & Director of Tutoring
Status: Student Worker
Days and Times: 5 hour commitment with the flexibility of 3 additional hours

  • 3 hours of in classroom support
  • 2 hours of one-hour study sessions (two separate study groups per week)
  • 3 hours of appointment general availability (Compensation is based on scheduled appointments, not general availability)

Position Summary: The Supplemental Instructor works closely with the professor in the classroom to support students in understanding the material. Additionally, the SI offers plenty of weekly availability outside of the classroom for students to drop in or schedule appointment to request assistance on, assignments, projects, and practice problems.

The Supplemental Instructor will:

  • Foster understanding of the material by assisting the professor in the classroom, and assisting students during study sessions and drop-in hours
  • Attend bi-weekly check-in meetings with the Senior Tutor, either individually or as part of a group
  • Maintain accurate and detailed attendance records of all students attending study sessions and appointments
  • Participate in semesterly performance reviews and complete end-of-semester surveys
  • Demonstrate a commitment to positively influencing classmates’ academic success and well-being

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Obtained an A in the completed HCU courses or higher-level course SI wishes work in
  • Reference from professor for SI course applying to
  • Must attend semesterly Tutoring Center Student Leader Trainings

Expectations:

  • Demonstrate ethical and responsible behavior
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Uphold confidentiality in all interactions with student and staff
  • Model and promote effective time management, professionalism, and study habits
  • Ability to assist students’ learning without doing the work for them
  • MATH 1302 class sessions will often not be lecture-based due to the nature of the class software. Supplemental instructors should not expect students to all be working on the same topic

About Training

All Tutoring Center Staff must completes training before each fall and spring semester.

About the Interview Process

  • The interview process includes a thirty-minute individual session to evaluate the applicant’s qualifications and potential for success
  • Candidates will be asked to prepare for a presentation (3 – 5 minutes) to how they will approach a role specific scenario
  • This interview allows candidates to showcase their strengths and provides staff with insight into their abilities
  • The process is designed to be efficient, transparent, and informative, ensuring candidates fully understand the expectations and commitments of the position.

Senior Leadership Positions

Senior leadership positions in the Tutoring Center provide experienced student staff the opportunity to guide peers, support daily operations, and help advance the center’s mission of academic excellence. Senior leaders are expected to model professionalism, initiative, and strong communication while serving as ambassadors for the Tutoring Center. Below is a more detailed list of leadership positions.

Reports to: Coordinator & Director of the Tutoring Center

Status: Student Worker

Days and Times: Flexible, with an average commitment of 5-10 hours per week

Position Summary: The Senior Tutor will specialize in one of four areas: academic coaching, front desk, general tutoring, or supplemental instruction. They will provide day-to-day management within their area of focus and oversee the corresponding student workers. The Senior Tutor work closely with the Coordinator and Director to offer logistical support for the Tutoring Center and ensure effective collaboration among student workers.

Job Description

The Senior Tutor will:

  • Mentor new or less experienced student workers, offering guidance and support
  • Assist in onboarding and training new student workers by demonstrating best practices for their specific roles
  • Lead and participate in semesterly training sessions to maintain College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification for student training
  • Monitor performance and offer feedback student workers ensuring consistent quality services
  • Assist in scheduling and maintaining adequate coverage for all tutoring and support services
  • Act as a liaison between student workers and leadership to address challenges, needs, or suggestions
  • Provide subject-matter expertise in their designated focus area
  • Assist in tracking student attendance, progress, and Tutoring Center outcomes
  • Contribute to program improvements by analyzing student feedback and providing actionable recommendations
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to align tutoring services with course objectives
  • Help student workers with appointment systems or online platforms to ensure smooth operations
  • Complete semesterly performance review and end of semester survey
  • Support the Coordinator and Director with event planning, resource management, and other logistics

Reports to: Director of the Tutoring Center

Status: Student Worker

Days and Times: Flexible, with an average commitment of 15-20 hours per week.

Position Summary: The Coordinator of the Tutoring Center is responsible for the daily management of all tutoring services, including Supplemental Instruction, Academic Coaching, embedded tutoring, and course-specific tutoring. This position also involves the supervision of student workers within the Tutoring Center’s leadership model. The Coordinator will collaborate with the Director to support the logistical operations of the Tutoring Center.

Job Description

The Coordinator will:

  • Provide leadership and management for tutoring services
  • Oversee all tutoring, academic coaching, and supplemental instruction programs
  • Plan and provide training each semester for all student workers involved in the Tutoring Center
  • Maintain College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification of student training
  • Supervise all student workers involved in the Tutoring Center, including the administrative desk team
  • Manage and develop tutoring appointment software in conjunction with the Writing Center
  • Track and analyze the efficiency and success of tutoring services by collecting and evaluating relevant student and service data
  • Collaborate with faculty to assess and develop tutoring needs
  • Partner with the Student Success Specialists to connect academically at-risk students to tutoring resources
  • Complete semesterly performance review and end of semester survey
  • Perform other duties as assigned by direct supervisor

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong project management skills
