Minor in Chemistry

The Chemistry minor at Houston Christian University leads students through a detailed exploration of matter, molecular interactions and chemical processes. This focused 23-hour program combines theoretical understanding with practical laboratory techniques, supported by research opportunities through the Robert A. Welch Foundation. Students develop analytical skills and scientific reasoning while investigating the molecular foundations that shape our understanding of the natural world.

The chemistry minor creates intriguing connections across academic disciplines at HCU. Biology majors can dive deeper into the chemical mechanisms driving biological systems, enhancing their preparation for medical studies. Engineering students investigate materials science at the molecular level. Business majors interested in pharmaceutical or chemical industries develop invaluable technical insights that bridge scientific innovation with market development.

Course Requirements

  • General Chemistry I and II with labs (8 hours)
  • Quantitative Analysis with lab (4 hours)
  • Organic Chemistry I and II with labs (8 hours)
  • Upper-level Chemistry elective (3 hours)

The curriculum builds systematically through each course component, with dedicated laboratory work throughout. Students complete at least 9 upper-level hours in residency, maintaining rigorous academic standards with a minimum grade of “C” in all courses. Through this focused exploration of chemical principles, students develop analytical capabilities that enhance their primary field of study while embracing HCU’s commitment to academic excellence and Christian values.
